Seventeenth-century Rome—with its Inquisition trials and political intrigue—was the birthplace of the Illuminati, one of the most influential secret societies of all time. The leaders of this society, Galileo Galilei and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, left clues scattered throughout the city to create the Path to Illumination. The most important clues were a mysterious text by the poet John Milton and the Four Altars of Science, representing the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Solving these clues would reveal the entrance to a secret location.
Among the sites we'll visit are the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo, St. Peter's Square, Santa Maria della Vittoria, Piazza Navona, and the imposing Castel Sant'Angelo (Castle of the Holy Angel), with its majestic cylindrical shape. We'll also see Il Passetto—the secret, elevated walkway of the popes—from the outside. And if all this seems like a lot of walking, don't worry: we'll have an air-conditioned minibus for transfers, and we'll take a sweet break to savor a delicious Roman custard-filled pastry.
