Wines & Riches of Beaune
The city of Beaune is strategically located in the heart of Burgundy and is surrounded by great, internationally renowned vineyards.
Considered the wine capital of this region, the Hospices de Beaune headquarters is an impeccably preserved museum, a must-see for those fortunate enough to visit the city.
Strolling through its narrow, winding streets, stopping here and there to taste a wine in the countless cellars of fine merchants scattered throughout the city, is an experience capable of providing indescribable pleasure for wine lovers. Burgundy's main wineries are based there. The ancient Flemish-style buildings remain forever in our memory, reminding us of all the splendor of the Duchy of Burgundy.
The most beautiful feature, and what made the Hospices so famous, is the roof of "tuiles vernissées," the colorful glazed tiles typical of the region. This type of roof can be found in several towns in Burgundy, but it is here at the "Hôtel Dieu" that one finds the most beautiful example. Note: the tiles can only be seen from the Hospices' inner courtyard, not from the street. Another highlight is the 15th-century polyptych depicting the Last Judgment, which sits in the last room before the visitor leaves.
