Description
Dover Castle was built in the 12th century and is renowned as the "Key to England" due to its defensive importance throughout history. The 'White Cliffs of Dover' are white limestone cliffs that create a stunning coastal environment and can be seen from the castle. It was built by King Henry II, who liked to impress and intimidate pilgrims on his route to Canterbury. The build-up to Operation Dynamo, a daring and successful operation to rescue British soldiers (and their allies) who were being massacred by German troops on the beach at Dunkirk, France, was one of the most significant events in the Castle's history.
Places you will visit during the tour: Dover Castle and city center, Canterbury Cathedral and city center. The Archbishop of Canterbury, who serves as the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church and has his spiritual seat at Canterbury Cathedral, is situated in Canterbury, the largest religious center in the United Kingdom. The Cathedral is the symbol of the city and deserves an extended visit.
