Conventual sweets are one of the greatest expressions of Portuguese gastronomic heritage, deeply linked to religious and cultural tradition. Originating in convents and monasteries since the Middle Ages, they reached their peak between the 17th and 18th centuries. With limited access to ingredients, nuns and monks used their creativity to transform eggs and sugar into true culinary masterpieces. Egg yolks became the star, while the whites were used to pass on habits or filter wines. This surplus of egg yolks, combined with sugar imported from Brazil, gave rise to a diversity of sweets that continue to delight today. In Porto, this tradition takes center stage. Besides its famous wines and rich historical architecture, the city is home to true treasures of convent sweets. A three-hour walking tour of the historic center allows you not only to sample these delicacies but also to learn the stories and curiosities behind each sweet.

Porto's Conventual Sweets Guide: Tradition, Flavors, and History

This 10-hour circular tour, departing from Porto, takes visitors on an inspiring religious and cultural journey through the heart of Minho. The route includes some of Portugal's most emblematic sanctuaries, sites of faith, heritage, and contemplation, combined with rich regional cuisine and authentic landscapes. The visit begins in Braga, the "Portuguese Rome," with visits to the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its baroque staircase and sublime views, and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro, an important Marian center of devotion and spirituality. The journey continues to Póvoa de Lanhoso, where the highlight is the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Porto d'Ave, deeply connected to the popular religiosity of Minho and located in a serene valley, ideal for prayer and retreat. Lunch is served in a traditional restaurant, with dishes such as roast goat, Barrosã veal, or rojões (roast pork sausage), always accompanied by local vinho verde (green wine). In the afternoon, the itinerary includes a visit to Braga Cathedral, Portugal's oldest cathedral, or the imposing Lanhoso Castle, a medieval fortress overlooking the region. The return to Porto concludes a day that combines spirituality, tradition, and landscape, revealing the essence of Minho.

Sanctuaries, History and Flavors: A Day of Spirituality in Minho

Leaving Porto in the morning, we head north with a delicious first stop in Esposende, along the Atlantic, to savor the traditional Clarinhas de Fão—a gem of convent sweets filled with chila jam and wrapped in a thin, crispy pastry. After this sweet awakening, we head toward Ponte de Lima, considered the oldest city in Portugal. Here, the historic center invites a leisurely stroll among cobblestone streets, centuries-old churches, and the iconic Roman-medieval bridge that crosses the Lima River. For lunch, there's nothing better than immersing yourself in the authentic flavors of Minho cuisine, with dishes like arroz de sarrabulho (rice with sarrabulho), rojões (rojões), or bacalhau à moda da terra (codfish). The afternoon is reserved for a visit to the Adega Cooperativa de Ponte de Lima, where you can discover the production process of the region's famous vinho verde (green wine), complete with a tasting and stunning views of the vineyards. On the way back to Porto, the route includes a stop in Santo Tirso for a brief visit to the Monastery of São Bento and to savor another convent sweet, the Jesuíta, ending the day on a remarkable spiritual, architectural, and gastronomic note. An itinerary that combines tradition, flavor, and authenticity in a single memorable day.

The next stop is Caldas de Aregos, known for its thermal springs and serene riverside scenery, an invitation for a brief pause before continuing on to Lamego. The route continues towards Régua, the heart of the Douro wine region, where the soul of the region is infused. Here, lunch is served at Quinta de Santa Eufémia, a traditional family farm that preserves ancestral winemaking methods. In the afternoon, the journey takes you to Pinhão, an emblematic location for the beauty of its train station and the amphitheater-shaped vineyards that descend to the river. This is the Douro in all its magnificence, where every bend in the river reveals new perspectives. We will take a break in the historic center of Braga to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch (not included). After lunch, we'll head to Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal and a World Heritage Site since 2001. This was the birthplace of Portugal's first king, Afonso Henriques. Guimarães' history is intertwined with the founding of Portugal's national identity and the Portuguese language. We'll have the opportunity to enter and explore Guimarães Castle, a 10th-century national symbol. From the outside, its medieval structure is impressive; from the inside, we can enjoy stunning views of the city. Next, we'll continue past the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the Church of São Miguel. Admire the imposing statue of D. Afonso Henriques and stroll through Martins Sarmento Square. On a three-hour tour through the streets of Porto, ancient tiles guide us on a true journey through Portuguese history. We begin at São Bento Station, where more than 20,000 blue and white tiles depict historical scenes, such as the Battle of Valdevez and King John I's entry into the city. Next, we head to the imposing Cathedral, where the cloister reveals religious ceramic panels that contrast with the building's Romanesque austerity. We'll come across the Church of Santo Ildefonso, whose 20th-century façade chronicles the life of its patron saint. Following Rua 31 de Janeiro, we'll reach the Capela das Almas (Cape of Souls), famous for its exterior tiles depicting the lives of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine. And finally, we'll marvel at the Carmo Church, whose 18th-century tiled side stands out as a true masterpiece. Each panel, each detail, connects us with the past, transforming the tour into an artistic and cultural immersion into the soul of Porto.
