Expedition through the Andes: From Villavicencio to the Chilean Border

This itinerary through the mountains of Mendoza offers one of the most scenic and exciting experiences in the Andean region, combining spectacular landscapes, impressive geological formations, and historical landmarks that celebrate the connection between Argentina and Chile. The journey traverses mountain trails, natural viewpoints, and places full of cultural and spiritual significance.

Villavicencio Caracoles Viewpoint

The tour begins with a climb up the winding curves known as Caracoles de Villavicencio, a stretch of mountain road full of zigzags, arid landscapes, and panoramic views. At the top, the natural viewpoint offers a spectacular view of the valley below, with the contrast of the dry, jagged mountains in the background. It's one of the most photogenic spots on the journey.

Paramillo Cross

Continuing the ascent, you reach the Paramillo Cross, a point of great symbolic and religious value, located in the heart of the Andes Mountains. Erected as a landmark of faith and protection for travelers and mountaineers, the cross is situated at an altitude of over 3,000 meters and offers a breathtaking view of the surroundings — especially in the early morning hours, when the mountains are bathed in a golden light.

Uspallata Valley

The descent leads to the Uspallata Valley, one of the most fertile and populated areas of the pre-Andean mountain range. This Andean village, surrounded by colorful mountains and curious rock formations, was historically an important transit point on the trade and military routes that crossed the Andes. Today, it is a haven of tranquility with a strong cultural and natural appeal.

Puente del Inca

Further along, the route leads to the impressive Puente del Inca, a natural bridge-shaped formation created by thousands of years of geothermal action and mineral sedimentation. Besides its unique beauty, the site has great historical value—it was used as a crossing by indigenous peoples and, later, by colonizers. Near the bridge, it is still possible to see the ruins of an ancient thermal complex that received visitors seeking healing and rest.

Aconcagua Viewpoint

A few minutes later, a mandatory stop: the Aconcagua Viewpoint, the ideal spot to admire the majesty of Aconcagua, the highest mountain in the Americas, at almost 7,000 meters altitude. The viewpoint offers a privileged view of the mountain and the Aconcagua Provincial Park, a protected area that conserves this giant of nature and its biodiversity.

Las Cuevas

The last Argentinian town before the border is Las Cuevas, a small village located at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. With rustic architecture, high-altitude landscape, and a climate typical of high altitudes, Las Cuevas is a resting point for travelers and mountaineers, as well as a base for those wishing to climb to the Christ the Redeemer of the Andes statue, located at the top of the mountain during the summer months.

Border with Chile: Cristo Redentor Tunnel

The crossing between Argentina and Chile is through the iconic Cristo Redentor Tunnel, an international tunnel excavated under the Andes Mountains that connects the two countries amidst the snow-capped peaks. Extending over 3,000 meters, the tunnel is a landmark of engineering and integration between the nations, symbolized by the statue of Christ the Redeemer installed at the highest point of the crossing.

This itinerary is a true crossing of the Andes — a journey through legendary roads, historic valleys, and breathtaking landscapes, ideal for those seeking adventure, contemplation, and connection with the grandeur of nature.
